The OSM community has been discussing routing on areas mainly in order to allow for pedestrian navigation on plazas etc.. The discussion mainly focuses on limited areas with a limited amount of blocking structures in an otherwise graph representable street scene. Off road motorcyclists share a similar use case exploring nature only to be blocked by deep waters or to steep downhill gradients.
